OpenID and OAuth: Why Should We Care?

Recently, MySpace announced that they were joining OpenID as a provider. At first glance, most people might read this and say “that’s nice,” and move on to the next story. However, for mainstream Internet users this is fairly important. The multiple usernames and passwords that people have can sometimes be replaced by a single ID using OpenID.

13 Apps to Turn Your iPhone into a Blogging Machine

Seeing as how Web services today are becoming more and more multi-faceted and multi-functional, particularly in the social networking and social media space, it really is open to debate what is and what is not part of a specific segment of the market. Where blogging starts and where networking ends, for instance, is a gray area that has grown ever larger with time. Mobile utilities in particular have evolved to contain powerful assets that accomplish several tasks at once.

I’ve spent the past five days testing the iPhone 3G and many of the wonderful applications that have been made available at the App store. Much of this time I focused on the “Social Networking” apps, or the ones that had social networking features. However, I came across a huge problem: without any friends, these applications are rather useless. This is a direct results of the Twitter vs. Plurk vs. Pownce issue: You have to go where your friends are.

It’s pretty much in line with everything experts have been saying on this topic for the last couple of years: unique visitors are a bad way to measure traffic, traffic from loyal users and search engine traffic are the kind of traffic you’re aiming for, etc.

For a moment let’s step back though and look at this whole Social Media movement that is basically taking over the Web. No matter from where you look information is flowing faster than it ever has before, but unlike before, Social Media is being driven by both consumer and content producers. Unlike when Google came out with their secret sauce algorithm called PageRank where the power of popularity is no longer in the hands of content producers. PageRank, in its simplest explanation, ranks a Web site by the number of links that were pointed at it.

On the heels of yesterday’s “Data Availability” announcement from MySpace, Facebook has just announced the launch their own initiative to allow users to port their profile data to other web sites. Here’s what will be included in Facebook’s version according to a post on the company’s developer blog:

Yesterday, following a study that showed declining interest in Facebook from the social network’s developer community, we posted a poll asking if you were fed up with Facebook. The results were a fairly resounding “yes.” In our most active poll ever, only 13% of you said that you are “Not At All” fed up with the social network and are still enjoying it just as much as when you signed up.

I’ve been hearing that May 1st was RSS Awareness Day for a few weeks, although I hadn’t really been able to pin down many details. However, since Dave Winer - the godfather of RSS himself - has posted about it, I figured it would be okay to spread the word here too.

For most of us here at Mashable, the biggest, most well known application running on the Rails platform we can think of is Twitter - a tool hardly known for its stability. While this contributes to the mythology of the platform’s instability, what really propagates it is a number of things.

YouTube Video Awards: The Triumph of Chocolate Rain

First of all, let me point out that this is late. I mean, best YouTube videos of 2007? Maybe it’s because I follow technology, but 2007 seems like a looong time ago. Furthermore, the actual winners seem a bit tired; since all those viral videos have been played all over the web over and over and over throughout 2007, seeing them again is a bit anticlimactic. Except, of course, the legendary Chocolate Rain.

The Best Way To Display News Online: Linear Vs. Contextual

The Best Way To Display News Online: Linear Vs. Contextual

The reason why I address this topic today is that Dave Winer, of RSS fame (among other things) said recently that the traditional front page is out and the columnized post roll is in, and that the new format should be adopted by news companies big and small. He exemplifies the New Orleans Times-Picayune in the time of the Hurricane Katrina catastrophe as a model of efficiency and post-dead-tree thinking. And…well…I don’t quite agree with that assessment.

I’m happy to announce that along with Drew Olanoff (former technology evangelist at Pluggd) and Eric Kerr (creator of TinyLoad), I have acquired ReadBurner, a very cool project launched earlier this year by Alex Marktl. As you might recall, ReadBurner displays the most popular shared items on Google Reader and received a tremendous amount of buzz after originally being discovered by Louis Gray back in January. But then life got in the way and Alex had to shut down the project to focus on the paid jobs that keep a roof over his head. When Drew alerted me to the situation, we immediately got in touch with Alex to see what we could do to keep this important project alive.
