RSS is a big deal, as anyone who's subscribed to even a few feeds probably knows. Once you get past just a few feeds, though, it can quickly get overwhelming. RSS can leave you feeling inadequate, brain-dead and uninspired.

I’ve been hearing that May 1st was RSS Awareness Day for a few weeks, although I hadn’t really been able to pin down many details. However, since Dave Winer - the godfather of RSS himself - has posted about it, I figured it would be okay to spread the word here too.

The reason why I address this topic today is that Dave Winer, of RSS fame (among other things) said recently that the traditional front page is out and the columnized post roll is in, and that the new format should be adopted by news companies big and small. He exemplifies the New Orleans Times-Picayune in the time of the Hurricane Katrina catastrophe as a model of efficiency and post-dead-tree thinking. And…well…I don’t quite agree with that assessment.

Shyftr stands for Share Your Feeds Together. A feed, or RSS (really simple syndication), is a way for content providers to push news content, blogs, podcasts, photo streams, and other content directly to you as it becomes available. Think of RSS like web site updates that inform you once the content is published; when a content provider makes changes to a particular section or topic on their site, you will receive notification through Shyftr -- no matter what computer you're using. Thousands of your favorite sites, from blogs to news sources to gossip pages, already use RSS for updating overall site changes and topic-specific updates (like the "entertainment" page on your favorite news site).
